Delete metadata from photos - how it works

Many photos, especially if they were taken with a cell phone, contain metadata. You should delete this sensitive data before uploading the images on the Internet, as they can contain information such as the GPS data.
Delete metadata from photos in Windows
Windows has a function that you can use to easily remove the data from your images:
- Open the properties of the image by right-clicking on the photo.
- Now switch to the "Details" tab.
- At the bottom of the window you can click on "Remove properties and personal information". The personal photo metadata should already be deleted.
Edit metadata of multiple photos at the same time
Of course there are also numerous free programs with which you can delete the metadata (also called EXIF data). The main advantage of this is that you can also use it to remove data from multiple images at the same time. One such program is the "Exif Tag Remover". You can easily delete the data with it:
- After you have installed the EFIX remover, open the program and click on "Add". In the newly opened window, navigate to the images you want to clean up and open them by double-clicking on the selection.
- The pictures should now be listed in the program. When you have selected all the photos, click "Next".
- In the next step, you can choose whether you want to overwrite the originals ("Overwrite Original"), select a folder in which the cleaned copies are saved, or have the copies saved next to the original image with the addition "cleaned" in the name.
- After pressing "Next" again, you can choose which metadata should be deleted. It is best to tick the "All supported" box and click again. This removes all photo metadata.
- The process is then started. If the program does not find any data to be deleted in the images, it shows "0 images cleaned. Error occured"
These instructions refer to a system with Windows 7 and the "Exif Tag Remover" in version 2.0. If you have an iPhone, you can also edit the meta data of your photos with the iOS app "EXIF-fi".
