Micro SD memory card: Remove write protection - how it works

If you cannot transfer or copy data to your micro SD memory card, you must remove the write protection. We'll show you how.
Remove MicroSD write protection: Lock switch on the micro SD adapter has been flipped
The most common cause is an accidentally flipped lock switch on the card adapter:
- The switch is usually located on the top left of the adapter (see picture). Slide it into the unlock position.
- Plug the adapter with the micro SD card back into the PC and try whether it works now.
- Tip: Curiously, sometimes it only helps if you flip the switch halfway.
Remove write protection from Windows
It is also possible that the microSD card has been write-protected by Windows:
- Insert the SD card into the PC using an adapter and go to the "Computer" or "Workplace".
- Right-click the removable disk.
- If you do not have the "full access" authorization, you must obtain it.
- Follow the steps below to access "Full Control": Click on "Properties", "Sharing", "Advanced Sharing", "Share this folder" and then on "Permissions".
- Check "Full access" and confirm with "OK". Click "OK" on the other windows as well.
Strip the lock switch to remove write protection
Occasionally it happens that the switch in the card reader itself is not operated. Here it can help if you isolate the lock switch.
- Take a small piece of tape to hand.
- Slide the switch on the adapter into the unlock position.
- Then stick the tape tightly over the lock switch.
- Then insert the adapter into the card reader.
Format the memory card with the camera
If none of this works, you can still try formatting the memory card with your camera. Unfortunately, all files are lost.
- Insert the microSD card into your camera.
- In the options of the camera you will find the entry "Format card".
- After formatting is complete, connect the SD card to the computer again.
- If write protection is still activated, carry out the solution again under "Remove write protection using Windows" (paragraph 2).
These instructions refer to Windows 7. We will show you how to recover deleted pictures from your (micro) SD card in the next practical tip.
