Microsoft Excel: Enter data using a mask
Similar to a database, data from an extensive Excel table can be entered with a mask less prone to errors. As of Excel 2007, the mask that was previously available in the "Data" menu seems to be missing. If you want to continue using this beloved method, you can integrate the hidden command for quick access back into the toolbar.
Show Excel command mask in the ribbon
- Click on the arrow symbol in the toolbar and select »Additional commands«.
- In the combo box »Select commands« change the setting to »Commands not in the ribbon«.
- Then search for and mark the "Mask" in this list and click on "Add".
- Close the dialog with »OK« to have the feature available at all times.
Enter data using a mask in an Excel table
- To work with the mask, your data area must contain column labels that you have entered beforehand.
- Then mark these labels and an empty line below or any data area that may already exist.
- With a click on the new symbol you change to the »mask«.
- In it you enter the related values of a data record in individual fields. You always see the name of the field and can easily scroll through the data records without slipping in the line.
- The advantage of this input form is that fields with formulas are automatically locked and cannot be accidentally overwritten.
