Microsoft OneNote: the 5 best tips
Microsoft OneNote is more than just a notebook. Here we show you the 5 best tips for the extensive note-taking software.
Tip 1: Send websites to OneNote with a timestamp and link
This function is particularly advantageous for online research. If you are surfing the Internet, you can easily save the relevant sections in your OneNote notebook with this function.
- In Internet Explorer you have the option "Save" to "Send to OneNote" as well as in the context menu to save marked sections in your notebook with a time stamp and the corresponding link.
- If you are not using Internet Explorer, you will find the function in the "Print menu".
- You can also use Internet Explorer to create notes that are then linked to the entire website. To do this, choose Tools> Linked OneNote Notes. A small OneNote window opens in which you can enter your comments on the page.
Tip 2: Edit and save PDF files in OneNote
With the help of OneNote you can even edit PDF files without additional software and save them in your notebook. This requires an installed Adobe Reader, but some alternatives also work.
- In OneNote, open the PDF file by Insert> Files> File Printout. Select your desired PDF file and confirm your selection with the "Insert" button.
- After the PDF file has been loaded, right-click on the inserted PDF.
- You now have the choice: Either the page currently displayed by clicking on "Copy text from this page of the printout" or import all pages, to do this click on "Copy text from all pages of the printout".
Tip 3: Templates for every purpose make working in OneNote easier
With various templates for Microsoft OneNote, you can save your recordings in a more orderly manner. This allows you to quickly create semester notebooks, customer notebooks or a notebook for research. In another practical tip, we have already shown you where to get the Microsoft templates and how to create your own OnNote template.
Tip 4: OneNote mobile: edit notes on your smartphone
Microsoft rolled out OneNote even bigger. The mobile apps for Android and iOS are now also available for download free of charge.
- A big advantage is that you always have your notebooks in sync with you. This gives you the opportunity, for example, to read and correct your notes on the train.
- In order to use the apps, however, you need to set up a live account from Microsoft.
Tip 5: Categorize notes for even more order
In Microsoft OneNote you can categorize your notes. This way you keep an overview and find important notes and much more. The more consistently you do this with your notes, the better you can work with them.
- Open the note you want to categorize.
- In the "Start" tab under the "Category" group you will find various symbols that are used for categorization. Select your corresponding symbol.
- You can then find your categories under Start> "Search categories".
