Microwave: These are suitable containers
In the microwave, you should only warm up your food in suitable containers. You can find out which containers are suitable and how you can recognize them here.
The right microwave dishes
If you buy new containers, you should make sure that the containers are labeled with the appropriate "microwave safe" label. Things are a little more difficult with older bowls. You should definitely follow these rules of thumb:
- Basically, do not put any closed containers in the microwave since there is a high risk that the container will burst. If you want to use a lid - for example when cooking - place it loosely on the corresponding container.
- So far, the motto was not to use metal containers or any metal-coated or decorated containers in the microwave. The latter still applies because the metal layer could melt in the microwave. The same also applies to aluminum foil.
- With pure metal pots, however, the opinion has changed in the meantime. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging have found that it is perfectly possible to use metal containers in the microwave if the containers are properly filled and opened wide.
- Otherwise you are usually right with glass and porcelain vessels - provided they are not too filigree.
- With a relatively simple trick you can also determine yourself whether the vessel is suitable for the microwave. To do this, put the empty dishes in the microwave, put them on the highest setting and wait about 20 seconds. If the jar is still cold afterwards, you can use it without hesitation.
- On the other hand, you should always be careful with plastic containers that are not marked accordingly, since toxic vapors can escape under certain circumstances.
- Tip: Food with a bowl should always be provided with one or two holes so that it does not burst.
You can have it cleaned in the dishwasher just as comfortably as you warm up your meal in the microwave. Another practical tip shows you what you can do if the dishes are not dry afterwards. In this tip, we also show you how to clean your microwave.
