Since its release, Fortnite has shaped the battle royale genre and shaken up the game market, but the classic Minecraft is still as popular as it was a decade ago. Find out the differences and similarities between the two generational gaming giants here.
Fortnite and Minecraft: essentially similar
Epic Games' Fortnite was released eight years after Markus "Notch" Persson's hit Minecraft. Millions of players pay attention to either Minecraft or Fortnite every day. Minecraft has 74 million active players (as of December 2018), while Fortnite has over 250 million (as of March 2019). Despite this big difference, keep in mind that Minecraft was released a decade ago and is still strong. Only the coming years will show whether Fortnite can do this. Regardless of their competition, the games have a lot in common:
- Resource mining: Minecraft and Fortnite allow the mining of resources using special tools such as the pickaxe. The raw materials are used for the construction of structures, weapons and especially in Minecraft for all things necessary for survival such as food. Resource utilization is one of the most attractive points of the two games for many players.
- Building : The mined resources are mainly used for building houses, bases, towers or walls. Whilst the structures are used strategically in Fortnite, entire locks are built in Minecraft.
- Single and multiplayer : Both games can be played either alone or together with others.
- Although both games are so similar, they are designed for different target groups. While Fortnite appeals to more competitive players and integrates shooter elements as a focal point in the system, Minecraft has been creating and exploring virtual worlds with imagination and inventiveness for years.
Minecraft and Fortnite inspire each other
Minecraft and Fortnite also influence each other by modifying the concept of one game into another:
- For Minecraft there are modifications created by users such as Fortnite Battle Royale from "Aetheerion". These bring the Fortnite maps and the system into the familiar pixel graphics from Minecraft and adapt them to Mojang's hit.
- With the Fortnite update in December 2018, the creative mode was brought into the game, which strongly reminds of Minecraft. Here you can build your own island in Minecraft style together with other players.
- In Fortnite Creative Mode, however, you cannot use maps other than the island, while in Minecraft complete worlds can be created from scratch.
- Conclusion: Although the games have parallels and influence each other, they focus on different aspects and therefore also address their own target groups. Which of the two game giants is better is more a matter of taste.
