Minecraft: Out of memory - what to do?
If you get the error message "Out of memory" at Minecraft, your memory is full. You can find out what you can do about this in this practical tip.
Minecraft has run out of memory: Install correct Java version
Minecraft uses the Java library. The required version of java can vary depending on the PC. How to find out which version you need:
- Open the control panel.
- Navigate to the "System" item.
- Search for the item "System type" here. Here is the architecture of your processor. If you have a 64-bit operating system ("x64-bit operating system, x64-based processor"), you must install this Java version; if you have a 32-bit operating system, it must be this version.
Allocate enough memory to Java
By default, Java has 1GB of RAM on your PC. With high-resolution textures or huge worlds, however, this may not be enough. You can move this limit in the Java settings.
- Open the control panel.
- Enter "java" in the search and select "Java".
- In the dialog that appears, switch to the "Java" tab and click the "View ..." button here.
- Double-click in the field under "Runtime parameters" and enter "-Xms2048M -Xmx2048M" (without quotes). 2048 stands for the number of MB that you make available to Java. In theory, you can enter any value here, but you should adapt it to the performance of your PC. You should not release more than half of your RAM for Java. If you use a 32-bit system, you can release a maximum of 1536 megabytes.
- Click "OK" and then click "OK" again.
- Each program that uses Java on your computer now has the specified amount of RAM available.
If that doesn't help, your PC is either too weak for resource-hungry Minecraft, or you're using a texture pack that is too high-resolution. Learn how to install a 3D mod under Minecraft here.
