Find WiFi hotspot with Facebook - how it works
Facebook now also shows you WiFi hotspots in your area. However, these are not the network's own hotspots. Rather, Facebook works with local companies that make their WiFi access available to customers. We'll show you how to use Facebook to find free WiFi near you.
Facebook: Find free WiFi hotspots nearby
Facebook collects WiFi hotspots from cafes, bars and shops in its app so that everyone can easily find the closest hotspot. We already reported to CHIP Online last autumn that Facebook is planning a hotspot search. Now it is finally here and you will find the search here:
- Open the Facebook app and tap on "Apps" in the menu.
- There you select "Search WLAN".
- If you have not already done so, you must now activate GPS on your smartphone. Depending on your smartphone, swipe down from the top of the screen or up from the bottom. The function is activated by tapping the GPS symbol.
- A list of shops and facilities in your area that offer hotspots will appear.
Find hotspots with Facebook - the best tips
- If you tap on "Map", you can also look at all the other hotspots in your city.
- This works even in other cities if you zoom in close enough and then click on "Search in this area".
- Note: Many stores are not (yet) included in the Facebook list. That is why on the next page you will find a list of all the major stores that offer hotspots.
