Play mkv on the PS3 - is that possible?
The PS3 is not only a game console, but also an extensive media player. But MKV files cannot be played with it. With a small detour you can still get your films up and running.
Mux the MKV files for the PS3 into the Blueray format
In principle, you could of course convert your MKV files to a PS3-compatible format. But part of the quality is always lost. Better: simply mux your films into a "m2ts transport stream". The PS3 can also play it - without any loss of quality. It's not as complicated as it sounds at first:
- Download the free conversion tool "tsMuxeR GUI" and run the EXE file.
- Then import the desired films using the "Add" button.
- Check "Tracks" in front of the desired streams. If you are unsure, you should simply mark all offered streams.
- Now select "M2TS muxing" under "Output". Then click on "Start muxing" to convert the MKV.
- Depending on the length of the film, this may take some time. When the process is complete, you can either copy the file to a USB stick or burn it as a Blueray - for example with "ImgBurn". The PS3 supports both variants.
For proper movie enjoyment, you should connect speakers to the PS3. This practical tip tells you what you should consider.
