Play MKV file with Windows Media Player - Here's how
Windows Media Player can play many things, but not MKV files. We show you how it is still possible.
Windows Media Player: Play MKV files
- Microsoft has not integrated MKV file support even under Windows 8. Special codecs are required for playback, which make the respective format readable.
- With the free Advanced Codecs for Windows 7 and 8 you get a small tool with numerous codecs. Install the program and activate the desired functions under the "MKV" tab. After a restart, Windows Media Player can play the MKV files.
- Note: It is much easier with the all-rounder VLC Media Player. Compared to Windows Media Player, this plays far more formats, including the MKV format.
