Shrink MKV files - Here's how
MKV files take up a lot of space. In this article we will show you how to shrink the files.
Freemake Video Converter: Shrink MKV files
The Freemake Video Converter is a very slim and easy-to-use tool that can also cope with numerous formats. For example, you can change the image size and bit rate for the MKV container.
- Software: Install the "Freemake Video Converter" program. With the German user interface you can import files directly. To do this, click on the "Video" button below the menu bar and add your MKV file. Select the MKV container format in the lower area. Then click on the gear icon to make further settings.
- Image size: In addition to the common formats (e.g. HD and Full HD), you can also define the image size in a user-defined manner. Pay attention to the correct aspect ratio, otherwise the video will be distorted. The resolution of your display device is recommended.
- Bit rate: With a lower resolution, the memory requirement becomes considerably smaller. If you want to save even more, you can reduce the bit rate. A good value for HD material is 5000 Kbps. To do this, set the "Bit rate type" to "User-defined".
- Audio: Even with a compressed audio codec you can save a lot of memory. The MP3 format currently achieves the highest compression. How to correctly encode MP3 can be read in another practical tip. Finally click on "OK" and then on "Convert".
