Connect monitor via Thunderbolt connection
In this practical tip, you will learn how to connect your Mac to an external monitor using a Thunderbolt connection.
Connect Apple's Thunderbolt monitor
The only way to connect a monitor directly to your Mac via Thunderbolt is Apple's Thunderbolt display. That comes directly with a Thunderbolt cable. All you have to do is plug the monitor into your Mac's Thunderbolt port.

Connect external monitors using a Thunderbolt adapter
If you don't have an Apple Thunderbolt display, you can easily connect third-party monitors with a suitable adapter:
- If you already have a monitor, first check which connection you need. Common formats are DVI, HDMI and VGA.
- Once you have found the right format, you can search for a suitable adapter in this table on the Apple website. Do not be surprised at the name "Mini DisplayPort connection". This is the predecessor of the Thunderbolt connection and compatible with Thunderbolt.
- If the prices of an original adapter are too high for you, you can also buy an adapter from a third-party manufacturer in almost every online shop. However, please note that Apple assumes no liability for damage caused if you use non-original parts.
- Now you only need the right cable to connect the adapter connected to your Mac to your monitor. These are offered inexpensively in almost every shop or are supplied directly with the screens.
Once you have connected the new monitors, you can set the resolution of your monitors.
