Convert mp4 to mkv

Download and install a conversion program
There are many converters for converting .mp4 and .mkv files. CHIP recommends the free tool Freemake Video Converter ".
- Download the Freemake Video Converter here.
- Select the "Custom installation" option in the installation wizard and deactivate the "Install Tune Up Utilities 2014" subitem.
- Finish the installation and start the "Freemake Video Converter".
Convert .mp4 to .mkv files using the converter
With a few short clicks, the program automatically converts your files.
- Click the blue "+ Video" button in the top left and select an .mp4 file.
- Go to the arrow in the lower right corner and then press the "in MKV" button.
- If necessary, select the desired resolution and click on "convert".
- If you have not changed the location, you will find the converted .mkv file in the "My Videos" library.
Conversion method for Windows only
It is important that you can only convert .mp4 files with this method on Windows PCs. The "Freemake Video Converter" is currently not available for Mac or mobile devices.
- As a Mac user, you can try the "Any Video Converter" tool.
Tip: Treat MP4 with "MKV Merge" as an MKV file
Windows users do not necessarily have to convert the MP4 file into an MKV file - with "MKV-Merge" you miss the MP4 film all the properties of a Matroska video.
- Download the free program MKVToolnix from CHIP, install and open it.
- In the "Mergen" submenu, right-click on the "Source files" field and select "Add file". Now look for an MP4 file and then press "Open".
- In the field "Target file name" you can specify the storage location and the name of the MKV film.
- Now click on the "Start Muxen" button to convert your MP4 file into an MKV file.
