MS Office Excel: Sort cells randomly
If you want to arrange lists randomly, Excel offers simple solutions. This practical tip shows you how to sort cells in a random order.
Randomly sort cells in Excel
A list can be randomly arranged with Excel according to the following scheme:
- First open your list in MS Office Excel.
- Insert an empty column next to the column you want to sort randomly.
- Write the formula "= RANDOM NUMBER ()" in the first free cell of your new column. Then copy the command into all other cells of the column until you have reached the end of your list.
- Now mark the column with the random numbers and click with the right mouse button on the marking.
- A context menu appears in which you click on "Sort" under "Sort". In the dialog box that follows, select "Extend selection" and confirm the query.
- Note: If you have a heading or label on your list, it may slip. Then insert an empty line above the list and enter your caption again.
Arrange columns at random in Excel
If you want to randomly arrange the columns of an Excel document instead of rows, you can simply swap the cells and columns of your table beforehand.
