MS Office Word: Split column of a table
If you want to split one or more columns in a Word table, you can do this quickly in the "Table Tools". You can read exactly how to do this in these instructions.
Split column in Word tables
If you have created a text with tables in MS Office Word and you add columns afterwards, your layout can get out of joint. In this case, it is safer if you simply split one or more columns of the table:
- Select the table column you want to split. The quickest way to do this is to drag the mouse to the top of the column. If the mouse pointer turns into a downward arrow, click the left mouse button.
- If the column is selected, you will find the "Table tools" tab with the "Design" and "Layout" command groups in the ribbon. Select "Layout" with one click.
- You will find the "Split cells" command in the ribbon under "Merge". Clicking here opens a dialog box in which you can specify the number of columns into which you want to divide the selected area. In the picture, for example, the column "2014" was divided.
- Remove the check in front of the entry "Merge cells before dividing". Otherwise all values of the marked area are merged into the first cell. Confirm your action with "OK".
- In the same way, you can only increase the number of columns for selected cells: Simply select the desired table area with the mouse button pressed and then proceed as described above.
