Alternatives to Microsoft Office applications are very popular. Many programs are available free of charge and offer a similar range of functions. We show you three good freeware solutions that you can use instead of MS Project.
This is MS Project - and these are the alternatives
If you want to plan complex projects, MS Project has been the method of choice for many years. You can not only plan individual workflows in advance. The individual tasks can also be attached. This is helpful if you are not working on the project alone. MS Project is a professional application whose license to use is correspondingly expensive. The investment can be very high, especially for small companies or private users, so that the search for alternative programs is obvious. We briefly introduce the following software to you below:
- Project Libre
- Gantt Project
- Rillsoft Project
Therefore you should use project management software
Careful planning is useful even for supposedly easy tasks such as planning a move. With the right software, you can proceed in a structured manner and avoid forgetting important aspects or making other mistakes. The more complex a project is and the more people are involved in it, the more important planning is. The easiest way is on the PC. With the programs, you can distribute work to those involved, keep an eye on which tasks have to be completed to be able to start the next ones and plan free buffer times.
Good project management makes sense for these reasons:
- You complete the project in a more structured and therefore more efficient manner.
- You keep an overview of tasks and project participants.
- You have a cost control.
- You can call up the status quo at any time and compare it with the schedule.
Project Libre started as an Open Proj
In 2007, Open Proj, a free MS Project alternative, was launched. The further development of Open Proj was discontinued after a short time. For this, the programmers have released other software based on it. It is called Project Libre and is continuously being developed. In Project Libre, just like in MS Project, you can create project processes as a tabular plan and as a GANT diagram. The basic functions are easy to learn. The deeper you go into planning and the more functions you want to use, the more difficult it is to learn. With Project Libre you can open MS Project files. It has built in many of the features of MS Project, making the free alternative a good replacement for Microsoft's software.
GanttProject is a simplified alternative
Another free tool is GanttProject. It is a Java application that is easy and intuitive to use. The range of functions is limited compared to other project management programs. For example, there are no options for time recording and a reminder function. The program is therefore more suitable for projects in which only a few participants are involved. The functions should always be sufficient for private use.
Rillsoft Project comes very close to MS Project
Anyone who has already worked with MS Project will quickly get used to Rillsoft Project. The software has a user interface that is similar to that of MS Project. Even the logo may seem familiar to MS Office users. This program also differs from the other MS Project alternatives in terms of functionality and support. However, that also has its price. Rillsoft Project is not a free tool. You can purchase different licenses with different functions. The use of Rillsoft Project only makes sense in the commercial sector.
If you also want to avoid using the other Microsoft Office programs, there are also free alternatives. You can find out what these are in the next post.
