MSI: Bios Update - how it works
In this article we show you how to update your MSI bios. MSI provides an in-house tool for this purpose. This is called "MSI Live Update" and you can update your bios in just a few steps. This usually saves you the manual flashing.
MSI: Bios update with Live Update
The easiest way to update the bios is with MSI Live Update. The tool was developed by MSI to make the update process safer and more reliable. This is particularly suitable for you if you have never had to update a bios. Because with the MSI Live Update you can't go wrong:
- Download MSI Live Update.
- Then install the software. When the installation is complete, open the program.
- You will now see the overview of MSI Live Update. Select "Manual Scan" under "Live Update". Then press the "Scan" button below. MSI will now check for any updates that may be available.
- Once the search is complete, you can check the available software. Then download it with the "Download" button. The installation window will then open after the download is complete.
- Select "Windows Mode" in the installation. This saves you having to flash the BIOS manually.
- The program now updates the MSI BIOS automatically. If your computer restarts during the installation, it is best to leave it completely alone. Under no circumstances should you try to force a restart manually! Doing so could severely damage the BIOS during the update.
- As soon as the installation is complete, the update is complete and your BIOS is up to date.
MSI: Flash the BIOS update yourself
If the automatic BIOS update does not work, you may have to flash the update yourself on your mainboard. Even if there were problems with previous updates, this could be the better option. Fortunately, this is also very easy to do thanks to Live Update:
- Follow steps 1 - 4 from the instructions above. In the window, select "In DOS Mode." Instead of "Windows Mode".
- Connect a USB stick to your computer. As a rule, this does not have to be larger than 512 MB. Warning: All data on the USB stick is deleted because the setup must format it. So make a backup of the data beforehand.
- Now select the USB stick from the dropdown list. MSI Live Update will now configure the USB stick accordingly. If this is successful, you can restart your PC with "Start".
- Now boot from the USB stick. Note: To do this, you have to change the boot order in the BIOS in most cases.
- Then follow the on-screen instructions to update your bios manually.
If your PC is not from MSI or no MSI motherboard is installed, the update process is usually different. In this case, read our general article on the BIOS update.
