Producing music for free with one program is no longer a problem these days. In addition to expensive software, there are numerous programs with no acquisition costs. We present five of them in this article.
GarageBand: classic for iOS
If you own an Apple product, you can download GarageBand from us for free. The app is known as free music production software, which has sometimes laid the foundation for Rihanna's hit "Umbrella". The software is suitable for the small budget and the first steps in digital music production. The program has the following features:
- Compatibility : GarageBand can be used with MacBooks, iMacs, iPhones and iPads. You only need to download it from the App Store. The projects can be used on any device via the iCloud.
- Tracks : There are 255 tracks available for the production of the pieces of music per file. These can be provided with plugins, virtual instruments and loops.
- Loops : The Apple Loops in the Sound Library can be used simultaneously by loops and virtual instruments from other developers. This gives you full control over the sound of the individual tracks. The integrated drummer allows you to create your own drum loops.
- Instrument recording: If you have additional devices, such as an audio interface, you can record vocals, guitar and other instruments directly via GarageBand. This works with little effort and also allows the track to be edited directly.
Audacity for free music production
Audacity is a long-standing alternative to GarageBand. Audacity is mainly used to edit existing tracks or audio files and less to arrange individual tracks. This function is also included. Audacity is particularly well suited for beginners due to its simple user interface.
- Compatibility : Audacity is available in comparison to GarageBand for Windows, iOS and Linux. Mobile devices are not supported.
- Record : In combination with an audio interface you can easily record instruments and vocals. These are then saved directly on the hard disk for further processing.
- Tools : Numerous tools such as noise removal, compressors, delays and the support of VST plugins characterize the software. This makes it possible to create entire songs.
- Formats : Audacity can read a variety of formats and export projects to them. MP3, WAV, AIFF, ADPCM, AU, IRCAM, and OGG are supported.
LMMS: Free music production
The former Linux software LMMS is now also available for Windows and Mac. It has many functions of the aforementioned DAW's (Digital Audio Workstation) and is based on a simple concept in terms of operation. Various editors are available for the individual functions. The more you are familiar with digital music production, the easier it is to use LMMS.
- Editors : The individual editors support various functions. The Song Editor, for example, is ideal for creating melodies and individual tracks. The FX Editor takes on a mixing function.
- Midi interface : For example, keyboards can be used with the software via the Midi interface. This significantly simplifies the process of admission.
Tracktion: Professional music production at no cost
If you choose Tracktion, you can rely on a professional DAW for your own home studio. The developer of the same name has been offering the last full version for free for years when a new version is ready for sale. As a program, the sequencer supports a pleasantly manageable user interface and numerous help for use.
- Functions : The range of functions can be compared with other DAW. Midi, VST plugins, audio editing, various tracks and drag and drop are all part of it. This makes the use intuitive and effective.
- Editing song tracks : Individual song tracks in music and film can either be added or edited. For example, you can easily customize a music video and move individual parts to the right place.
Cakewalk: Free thanks to BandLab
Another free music production software is Cakewalk. The program is one of the best known and most popular DAW and cost around 400 euros under the original developer Gibson. After the takeover by BandLab Technologies, the professional software is offered free of charge and offers a scope that Cubase or Logic Pro does justice to.
- Inputs and outputs: The inputs and outputs of the software are not limited. You can add as much as you want. You can also use numerous tracks at the same time.
- Sample Rate : The software's sample rate extends to 348 kHz. The sound and recording quality improves according to the sample rate.
