Useful iPhone apps for people with disabilities
Unfortunately, there are only a few iPhone apps for people with disabilities that make their lives easier. We present the best to you.
Wheelmap: Check and find places suitable for wheelchairs
- "Wheelmap" is a free map app that shows various facilities, bus stops, train stations, restaurants, etc. Every user can rate the accessibility of these places. In the past few years, a huge database of places has been created, of which almost everyone has already been rated.
- If a facility is marked in green, it is free of barriers. If it is marked in red, it is not suitable for the disabled. Yellow means "only with restrictions" and gray places have not yet been examined and are waiting for an evaluation.
- Conclusion: With the "Wheelmap" a big project has started, which makes life easier especially for wheelchair users. Alternatively, the iOS app "MyHandicap" is available.
HandicapX: Find disabled toilets all over Germany
- Similar to "Wheelmap" you will find a map in the iOS app "HandicapX" on which places for disabled people are marked. However, these are only toilets.
- The map shows many accessible and non-accessible toilets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The points are marked with green and red pins.
- Conclusion: The app is ideal for finding the next disabled toilet. With currently 3.59 euros, however, it also has its price.
Ariadne GPS: navigation system for the blind
- With the app "Ariadne GPS" you get a navigation system for the blind for 5.49 euros.
- Thanks to "Ariadne GPS" blind or visually impaired people can be navigated through known or new areas.
- When the display is touched, the app announces exactly the current location. This makes it easier to orientate yourself.
VerbaVoice: app for the hearing impaired
- With the free "VerbaVoice" app, you can always carry your personal interpreter with you.
- If you have registered with the service, you can make appointments with an interpreter from the company. The translator then translates the spoken word of your counterpart live via the app. On request, this can be done either in text form or by video.
- However, you have to bear the cost of this service yourself. Health insurers only pay for such services in very few cases. For students at school or university, however, this may be possible.
RehaScout fuel assistant: help for drivers
- You can use the free "RehaScout Tank Assistant" to find petrol stations in your area that offer a fuel service for the disabled.
- Once you have arrived at the petrol station, you can use the app to inform the petrol attendant. This comes out, refuels for you and handles the payment process for you. It is no longer necessary to honk or shout for help.
- Who wants to join in? Numerous large and small petrol stations already support this service. In a personal test, a Total and an Aral petrol station were found in the immediate vicinity.
