Navigon apps are being discontinued: Subscribers need to know this
Most of the Navigon apps will be discontinued in a few weeks. In this practical tip, we will tell you what you absolutely have to consider as a subscriber and what alternatives there are.
Navigon discontinues service: Which apps are affected?
On May 14th, Navigon ended the service for most of its apps. These include the applications Navigon, Navigon Regions and Navigon Cruiser. The apps disappear from both the App Store and the Google Play Store.
- Two Navigon apps will remain online: These include Navigon select and Garmin HUD EU / NA. This is probably due to contractually agreed cooperation with other companies such as Telekom.
- Navigon was acquired by Garmin in 2011, also a manufacturer of navigation devices. Since then, Navigon has focused primarily on apps instead of satnavs. Garmin justified the step to take the apps off the net for "strategic reasons".
End of Navigon apps: you should know that
- If you have a monthly or annual subscription in a Navigon app, you can continue to use the app as usual until the end of the term. However, there will be no more updates.
- If you have an unlimited subscription, Navigon promises a term of at least two years. What happens afterwards is still unclear. However, it is not unlikely that the app will then be completely removed from the network.
- Important: Android users must cancel the current subscription before May 14th. Otherwise, the subscription simply continues. For iPhone users, the subscription will no longer be automatically renewed from this date.
- If you reinstall your smartphone, you can download the app again for at least two years. However, you cannot switch between iOS and Android.
- Since roads, road courses and speed limits keep changing, regular navigation updates are important. In order to always stay up to date, you should look around for an alternative in good time.
