Hives during pregnancy - uncomfortable, but harmless
First the good news: hives during pregnancy pose no health risk for your child.
- An unpleasant hives can be caused by different stimuli.
- Such stimuli can be an allergy, for example to food, medication or pollen.
- The hives with their typical symptoms can also be caused by physical stimuli. Coldness plays a major role here.
Hives usually go away fairly quickly during pregnancy
An indefinite messenger substance, histamine, is responsible for the hives.
- Histamine is usually released by the body to defend itself against foreign substances.
- So usually so-called antihistamines help with hives. Cortisone is sometimes used in severe cases.
- Both drugs are not suitable for pregnant women. Therefore, you should not use over-the-counter antihistamines during pregnancy if you suffer from hives.
- If you have had hives more often before pregnancy, it may even improve significantly during pregnancy.
- With acute hives, with a little luck, the symptoms will disappear within a few days. Usually the hives should be over after six weeks at the latest.
- You can't really treat hives during pregnancy. You can only alleviate the symptoms such as itching.
- Be sure to talk to your gynecologist about what measures you can take to relieve the symptoms of hives.
