Power supply and 80 Plus: How much electricity do I save?
Power supplies with the "80 Plus" certification are said to save significantly more electricity, but in reality this is not necessarily the case. We'll show you what you need to know about the power supplies.
80 Plus power supply: How much electricity can I save?
- The power that a power supply consumes never reaches 100 percent in the computer. How efficiently, i.e. what percentage of the electricity is actually used sensibly, varies from power supply to power supply.
- Power supplies with the "80 Plus" certification offer at least an efficiency of 80 percent. With the additions of bronze and silver, an efficiency of between 80 and 90 percent is achieved, depending on the workload. At 80 Plus Gold, the efficiency is between 89 and 92 percent. With platinum and titanium, efficiencies of up to 96% are guaranteed.
- Since efficiency is often not specified for power supplies without certification, it is difficult to compare the power supplies with each other. Power supplies without certification can also achieve efficiencies of over 80% and are therefore not necessarily worse.
- With average use, you usually save only single-digit euro amounts per year with an 80 Plus power supply. For permanent users, however, the deployment can pay off in the first year. If the purchase price is not higher than 20 euros, the upgrade can also be worthwhile for the average user.
