Test network speed - the 3 best tools
With special software, you can test your network speed to get the most out of your connection. We show you the three best tools for this.
Test network speed at Jperf
The first tool Jperf has not been updated for a long time, but for many it is an insider tip among network tools.
- For the speed test with Jperf you need two computers in your network. It doesn't matter whether they are connected via LAN or WLAN. One computer acts as a server, the other as a client. You can connect it to the server with just a few clicks using the IPv4 address and then test the connection.
- With Jperf you can test your connection for a certain time or until a certain amount of data has been transferred. In addition to other settings, you can specify the format in which your measurement results should be ejected, for example in "MBit / s".
- You can download Jperf free of charge from our download portal.
Test network speed: LANBench
If Jperf offers you too many options and you prefer a slightly clearer user interface, LANBench is the right choice for you.
- Here, too, you need two computers on which to start the tool. You set up the server with just one click on "Lists" and then set the correct IP of the server computer on the client. You can do this by clicking on "File" and "Configure".
- With LANBench you can also select the individual duration of the test and the size of the test packages.
- LANBench is available free of charge from the developer website.
LAN Speed Test: Test speed in your own network
If you only have one computer on your network, you can install LAN Speed Test. This tool uses another method to measure network speed, but for which you need at least one shared folder on another device, such as a network drive connected to your router.
- For its test, LAN Speed Test writes files to the drive connected via the network and then reads them out again. As it repeats this process for as long as you have set it, it measures the time it takes.
- Even if the test result can be influenced by the computer performance, LAN Speed Test is a fast and reliable tool with which you can quickly get the speed values of your network.
- A full license is available for $ 6. However, the standard functions are activated in the free version.
In another practical tip, we will show you how you can measure your WLAN speed.
