For security reasons, you should change your router's network key regularly. We'll show you how it's done.
General instructions: Change the network key of the router
In this paragraph you will find general instructions. If you own a FritzBox, you will find more detailed instructions in the next paragraph.
- Start your browser and open the user interface of your browser. Depending on the manufacturer, this can be done via "fritz.box" or "alice.box" or via the IP address of the router. You can find them on the bottom of the router.
- A login may now be necessary. You can find the password for this either in the manual, below the router or in a letter from your Internet provider. If you have already logged into your router, you may have already changed it.
- The function can be found in various locations on the left in the menu. It is best to look under the menu items "Security", "WLAN" or "Home Network" for items such as "Network Key", "Security" or "Security Key".
- Under "WPA encryption" you will find an input field in which you can delete the old network key and enter a new one.
- It must be between 8 and 63 characters long and should preferably consist of a combination of numbers and letters. Older routers may only support entering numbers.
- Then click on the "Save" or "Apply" button and close the browser. The network key has now been changed so that each device can then only connect to the Internet using the new password.
Change the WLAN password in the Fritzbox
- Open the fritz.box user interface.
- Click on "WLAN" in the menu on the left and select "Security" from there (see picture).
- Here you can see the old "WLAN network key" at the bottom, which you can change.
- Once this has been done, click on the "Apply" button at the bottom right.
If you want to grant friends or acquaintances access to the Internet without them being able to access the settings, it is best to set up a guest access. How this works with the Fritzbox can be read in this practical tip.
