With the entry into force of the GDPR, new general terms and conditions apply to WhatsApp. How they object to the transfer of data to Facebook also changes. In this article we explain the new procedure to you.
WhatsApp: Under these conditions, you can object to the transfer of data to Facebook
According to the new General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to object to the processing of your data. In order to be able to submit the relevant application, however, some conditions must be met:
- You must live in a country where the new regulation applies. This includes all countries of the European Economic Area and their territories abroad. A detailed list of all countries can be found in the WhatsApp FAQ in the section "Who provides WhatsApp services?".
- According to the WhatsApp FAQ, the legal basis for data processing must also be the legitimate interest of WhatsApp or a third party. This also includes tasks that are carried out in the public interest.
- You can object to the processing of your data for targeted direct advertising at any time, regardless of the legal basis.
How to file an objection
If the above requirements are met, you can object to the processing of your data simply by sending an email to . This must contain the following information:
- Your first and last name
- Your email address and the telephone number with which you use WhatsApp
- The country you live in
- The data processing activity (s) against which you object
- You must also explain what effects data processing has for you and which rights and freedoms you believe will be affected.
The further course of the opposition procedure
After your objection has been received by WhatsApp, it will be checked objectively and then approved or rejected.
- If your objection was successful, WhatsApp will notify you and stop processing the information you have objected to.
- You also have the option of requesting that your data be deleted. You can submit the request as part of your objection email or send it separately to the same email address.
