The Google Nexus 5 also hangs up every now and then. However, if this happens too often, this can have various causes. We explain what you can do in this practical tip.
Nexus 5 hangs up: Full RAM
Since Android 5.0 Lollipop, RAM usage has increased, especially on Nexus devices. Most devices now consume around 80 percent. If a device is in continuous use and is not restarted from time to time, the RAM memory is always full. How to solve the problem:
- First and foremost, you should restart the device every now and then. If the Nexus 5 runs 100 hours or more, there are often stutters, the homescreen is constantly reloading or the smartphone simply gets stuck. Then it can neither be operated via the touchscreen nor via the soft buttons. With a restart, the RAM memory is emptied and the device should run smoother for now.
- You can also clean up the RAM memory using an app. In addition to accelerating the device, the free application CCleaner also comes with many other useful functions, such as an app manager.
- Another trigger for increased RAM consumption is open apps in the background. Use the right soft button to open all open apps. Close the applications here by swiping the open cards to the right.
Nexus 5 hangs: Change launcher
If the home screen stalls or reloads too often, you should try an alternative launcher:
- The Appex Launcher, for example, is recommended here. The paid pro version for currently 4.39 euros also has many interesting features with which you can further personalize your homescreen.
- Another proven launcher is the GO Launcher EX app. You can also use a wide range of modifications here.

Nexus 5 hangs: Nothing works anymore - you can do that
If your Nexus smartphone has hung up in such a way that nothing works at all and you cannot use the touchscreen or soft buttons, this method helps:
- Since the battery is built into the Nexus 5, there is unfortunately no way to turn off the power on the suspended device. To restart, press and hold the power button for about ten seconds until the device reboots itself.
- If the problem persists, you should reset your Nexus 5 to its factory condition. Back up your data beforehand. We'll show you exactly how it works in another guide.
