NFC: range and speed
The NFC local technology is installed in more and more smartphones. In this practical tip, we explain how the range and speed of the radio standard is.
NFC - radio transmission for small distances
The abbreviation NFC stands for Near Field Communication. This means that NFC is specially designed for data transmissions with very short distances. This is intentional - this makes NFC particularly secure.
- Communication with NFC only works within a few centimeters. The maximum is approximately 10 cm.
- NFC is also very minimalist in terms of speed: A maximum of 424 kilobits per second are possible.
- Since NFC is intended almost exclusively for the transfer of small amounts of data - for example, for cashless payments by smartphone - the low speed is not a problem. To exchange larger files, you can still use Bluetooth or a cloud service as a faster alternative.
- Quite a few users have security concerns about the payment function in smartphones. This is also largely unfounded, since every single payment has to be confirmed by the user on the display.
