Nikon camera: Download photos to the PC

Uploading photos to a PC is not that easy with some Nikon cameras. In this practical tip, we will show you exactly how it works.
Upload photos wirelessly to your PC while taking photos
WLAN: To upload images directly to a PC during a shoot, you need the Nikon Camera Control Pro software:
- For the first try, we advise you to download the free demo of Nikon Camera Control Pro.
- The software currently supports the D200, D2Xs, D3, D300, D40, D40X, D60 and D80 camera models from the Nikon D series.
- With the software you can also control your camera remotely and edit your pictures directly from the program.
Transfer photos from the SD card to the PC
Almost all Nikon cameras have a slot for SD cards. If you have a suitable card reader on your PC or notebook, transfer the images as follows:
- Open the SD card slot on your Nikon camera and remove the memory card.
- Insert the memory card into the card reader on your computer. With laptops you will usually find this on the right or left side of the device; usually on the front of desktop PCs.
- Wait until your PC has recognized the memory card as a mass storage device. If you do not find the storage location, open your Explorer and look under "Drive C:" for external data media.
- As soon as you see the SD memory on your PC, you can transfer the files to your computer.
Transfer pictures from the Nikon camera via cable
If you do not have an SD card slot, you still have the transfer via USB cable.
- Connect your Nikon camera to your PC with a USB cable. For the common Nikon cameras you need a mini USB cable. If you do not have a suitable cable, first find out in the manual for your camera which connection you need.
- Your computer shows you the camera in Explorer either as a mass storage device or as a camera icon. This is the case if your camera supports PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) transmission.
- If you open the storage location of your camera, you can copy and paste the data onto the PC.
