E-pedal in the Nissan Leaf: This is how the technology works
The e-pedal in the new Nissan Leaf is also known under the name "One-Pedal-Driving" - this means driving with just one pedal.
- As the driver, you can activate the e-pedal at the push of a button. You only need the accelerator pedal to drive. The brake pedal remains active, but is only used for emergency braking.
- The way it works is simple: if you want to accelerate, press the pedal down. If you want to brake or stop, apply less pressure to the pedal. To drive at a constant speed, hold the pedal in a middle position.
- The technology is based on recuperation, i.e. energy recovery in electric motors.
- When an electric car brakes like the Nissan Leaf, the wheels and motor act like a generator that feeds electricity into the batteries. The amount of electricity this generator generates can be precisely controlled.
- The less pressure you put on the pedal, the stronger the generator will work. The car is then braked to a standstill.
One-pedal driving brings these advantages
The e-pedal should make driving with electric cars even more efficient. In addition, Nissan promises an increase in driving comfort.
- Since the car is mainly braked by the engine, the brakes do not wear as much and you can achieve greater ranges through energy recovery. So you are significantly more economical.
- Driving with a pedal should also make dense city traffic more bearable. Since you no longer have to switch between accelerator and brake pedals, journeys in stop-and-go traffic are less strenuous.
- Even if you have to stop on the mountain, you don't need a brake. The car won't roll away when you take your foot off the accelerator.
