Nokia 9 PureView: How to Record in RAW Format (sponsored)

With the 9 PureView, Nokia presents a treat for lovers of cell phone photography. Proud five cameras are arranged in a circle on the back of the device. As a result, the manufacturer offers photographers unique creative opportunities - especially if they use the RAW format to save images on the Nokia 9 PureView.
True RAW format despite the double processor
Technology full: So that the Nokia 9 PureView can process the data from the five cameras properly, two processors have been installed. In addition to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 there is a co-processor from the US start-up company Light. This is specifically responsible for image processing. There are also graphics chips in the device that calculate the depth of field. The full 6 GB of RAM will then take care of the rest. If you want to edit your pictures directly on your mobile phone, you can do this with apps such as Adobe Lightroom CC.
If you decide to save images in RAW format so that you can edit them later on your PC, Nokia provides enough space: 128 GB of internal memory is impressive. The RAW data initially migrate through both processors, but you can still speak of real raw files. Nokia provides some data that you can then edit.

Briefly explained: That is what RAW means
By definition, the RAW file format is the format with which cameras write data to the memory after processing without digitization. So these are "digital negatives". The format always differs depending on the manufacturer, sometimes also the model type. Even if the editing then becomes more complicated - because not every program can open every RAW file - you will only get your image unfiltered and unprocessed in this format.
In addition, other formats, such as JPEG, do not store all the information that the sensor records. An example: In JPEG, 256 brightness gradations are recorded per color channel, in RAW there are again 1, 024 to 16, 384 gradations.
"Crazy" - This is how the PureView shoots your pictures
There are seven openings on the back of the Nokia 9 PureView: three monochrome cameras with 12 megapixels, two cameras with RGB sensors (also 12 megapixels), a time-of-flight camera (which only supports the autofocus in PureView) and one LED flash. The monochrome cameras can capture more light, which is why Nokia has installed three of them here. All have the same focal length. At first glance, this seems confusing, other manufacturers use their double cameras with different apertures to, among other things, optically zoom. Nokia offers two and five times digital magnification, which thanks to the five cameras is sufficient and better than digital zoom with just one camera.
This "crazy" concept enables the same photos with different exposures and white balance. The result is 5 times 12 megapixels (a total of 60) photo data. With multiple exposure, an impressive 240 megapixels of data come together. These are then optimally put together.
With this immense amount of data you can work well afterwards. You can create various depth of field effects because the cameras first record everything in focus. Another special feature of the Nokia 9 PureView are excellent black and white pictures. Thanks to the monochrome sensors, you can take real black and white photos with a clear structure and neat grayscale instead of color photos, from which the color is subsequently removed.
The time-of-flight (ToF) camera is used by other manufacturers on the front for hand gestures. ToF means 3D camera systems that can measure distances using runtime methods. Since these cameras record in real time, movements can be tracked. Nokia, on the other hand, uses this technology to support autofocus. Thanks to ToF, it reacts faster and better.
