Notebook: FN key does not work - you can do that
If the Fn key on your notebook doesn't work anymore, it is defective in the worst case. However, an incorrect setting can also hinder the function of the button. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Fn key on the notebook deactivated - this can help
With a little luck, you have just deactivated the Fn key with an unfortunate key combination. However, this can be quickly removed:
- If you press the [Fn] + [Num] keys simultaneously, the lock is released.
- Alternatively, try it with the key combination [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [Num].
- If your keyboard does not have a number pad, use the [Fn] + [F11] keys.
Fn key not working - what to do?
Most manufacturers install software on the computer to use the Fn keys. The commands are only recognized by this software.
- Open the Control Panel and look for the software under "Programs". For example, these are called "ATK Package" or "VAIO Event Service". Right click to fix the software.
- If you have completely reinstalled Windows, you also have to reinstall the software for the Fn keys. You can find this either on the manufacturer's website or on the second partition. Many computers have a second partition with drivers and additional software.
- If that doesn't help, the problem may not be the software, but the hardware. We will show you how to repair a notebook key in the next practical tip.
