Notebook: replace the fan - you have to consider that
If your notebook is humming and the fan is working at full speed, you can replace or clean it. However, there are some things you need to consider to avoid damaging your laptop. We show you the correct procedure in this practical tip.
DIY - Clean or replace the notebook's fan
Proper preparation is important to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
- Find a sufficiently dimensioned work surface and clean it. It is recommended that you place an additional towel to avoid scratching the back of your notebook.
- You will also need a special screwdriver set, as the fan will be anchored with other screws. With the mini screwdriver set from Hama (available on Amazon for around 12 euros) you are equipped for almost all screw types.
- The room should also be sufficiently illuminated so that you can correctly recognize the components.
Exchange the ventilation element of the laptop
Now you can start. Note that your notebook's warranty may become void once you remove the cover. You can also take a look at the individual steps below in our picture gallery.
- Loosen the screws from the cover of your notebook and remove the battery.
- Then look at the inside of the laptop. In addition to the hard disk and the RAM memory, you can also see the fan, which is often connected to a heat pipe.
- With some notebooks it is therefore necessary to remove the heat pipe beforehand. In our example, the fan can be removed without having to unscrew the cooling line.
- Now carefully disconnect the power supply of the fan from the mainboard (see picture - arrow).
- You can then remove the fan screws and gently lift it out of the housing.
- If dust has accumulated under the fan, you can now remove it.
- Now you can reinsert and screw a new or cleaned fan. Don't forget to power the fan again.
- Finally, you only have to screw the cover back onto your notebook and insert the battery.
If you still have problems with overheating, you can use a tool like "SpeedFan" to track them down. In the next article, we will also show you how to properly cool your PC and laptop and avoid heat stroke.
