Exchange notebook keyboard - how it works
If your notebook keyboard no longer works or only functions incorrectly, you can replace it yourself. We'll show you how.
General notes on keyboard replacement for notebooks
- Warranty: Replacing the keyboard and opening the casing will void the manufacturer's warranty.
- Damage: If you are handling pointed objects below the keyboard, you must never touch any of the other components. These can be damaged and make the entire laptop unusable.
- Tools: Your tools should never be magnetic. Magnetic screwdrivers could damage the hardware at the slightest touch.
- Power: Be sure to shut down the laptop beforehand and pull the power plug.
Step 1: release the laptop keyboard
Depending on the notebook model, the keyboard is installed differently and must be removed differently. Therefore, follow the instructions that are suitable for your model. Be sure to turn off your computer before removing it.
- Unhooking: If you see small notches on the upper edge of the keyboard, you can press into it with a small screwdriver. So gradually all brackets open and the keyboard can be raised.
- Unscrew: You can remove or unscrew the cover above the keyboard. You can then simply remove or unscrew the keyboard.
- Pry out: Above all, many newer and slimmer laptops have no screws on the housing. Here the keyboard may have to be levered out with a pointed object (see picture).
- Warning: If the keyboard is loosened, you should only lift it very slightly. The keyboard is connected to the laptop via a cable, which we will remove in the next step.
Step 2: remove the notebook keyboard
- The keyboard is connected to the computer with a wide cable. To release the cable, the lock must be carefully pushed up with a small screwdriver.
- These are usually one or two black or white plastic components. These are either above the connector or to the left and right of it.
- The cable can be easily removed from the holder after loosening.
Step 3: replace the notebook keyboard
You can order a new keyboard from special electronics retailers and various online shops. The prices are usually between 50 and 80 euros.
- Insert the cable of the new keyboard into the holder and press down on plastic clips to fix the connection.
- Then reinsert the new keyboard as it was removed.
If only a few keyboard keys do not work, you can usually repair the notebook key. In another practical tip, we will show you how.
