Repair NTFS - how it works
If the NTFS file system is malfunctioning, you will need to repair it. For example, errors occur after lightning strikes or improper shutdown of the computer. We show you how you can repair NTFS with little effort.
Repair NTFS via recovery console
The easiest way to repair the NTFS file system is from the recovery console. For this you need a bootable Windows CD or a bootable USB stick. We will show you how to create this in another practical tip.
- Boot from your installation media after a restart.
- As soon as Windows loads the required components, you should see a selection of options. Navigate to the recovery console via the menu item "Recovery options" or simply press the [R] key.
- In the following window you have to select the drive on which Windows is installed. Usually this is marked as drive 1. If you want to repair another drive, select it.
- The recovery console should now open after entering your password. Enter the following: "chkdsk c: / f / r"
- Then confirm your entry with [Enter]. The "Checkdisk" program will now do its job and repair your hard drive. As soon as it is finished, you can close the console with "exit" and restart your computer.
