NTFS - what is it?
In this practical tip, we explain what is meant by the term "NTFS".
NTFS is a file system
With NTFS (New Technology File System) your data is organized on the drive. On the one hand, the computer knows what to do and on the other hand, you can quickly find the stored data. NTFS is the successor to FAT.
- NTFS was released in July 1993 by Microsoft together with the "Windows NT 3.1" operating system.
- In contrast to FAT32, NTFS can also manage files over 4 GB. In theory, up to 16 exibibytes are possible with NTFS.
- With NTFS it is possible to encrypt data (EFS from Windows 2000).
- NTFS offers better protection against data loss.
- Linux: With the driver "NTFS-3G" you can access drives with NTFS.
- Mac OS X: NTFS file systems have been supported since version 10.3. Programs like "NTFS for Mac® OS X" or "NTFS-3G" also give you write access.
