Change interface in Ubuntu - the best tips
If you are not happy with Ubuntu's standard interface, you can change it at any time. Here's what you should consider when installing the three most popular Unity alternatives.
New Ubuntu interface with KDE - the best known Unity alternative
KDE is a fairly well-known desktop for Ubuntu, which is somewhat reminiscent of Windows. If you are used to Unity, the change will be a bit of a hassle, but it is great for beginners. KDE also scores with a variety of setting options and leaves (almost) nothing to be desired. To install the Unity alternative, simply follow these instructions:
- Open the terminal and enter "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". This package contains all applications that should be used on the KDE desktop.
- Then type "sudo apt-get install language-pack-kde-de" to use KDE in German. Log out once the installation of the two packages is complete.
- Now you see a different login screen than usual. Before you register, select "KDE" as the session type and then log in. Now you can use the KDE desktop environment.
Unity alternative number two: Mate as an Ubuntu interface
Mate is a desktop environment that is also used in Linux Mint. It is characterized by classic operation and has a certain similarity to the old gnome. To install this desktop, you just have to tap the terminal a few lines:
- First add "echo" deb //repo.mate-desktop.org/archive/1.8/ubuntu $ (lsb_release -cs) main "| sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mate-desktop.list "into the terminal, followed by the command" wget -qO - //mirror1.mate-desktop.org/debian/mate-archive-keyring.gpg | sudo apt-key add - "
- Finally, enter "apt-get update" and "apt-get install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-notification-daemon". Log out as soon as the installation is complete and select "Mate" as the session type.
The third in the league: LXDE as Ubuntu-DE
The resource-saving desktop environment LXDE is particularly suitable for older devices.
- LXDE comes without additional programs and can be installed with the simple command "sudo apt-get install lxde".
- Here, too, you have to log out after installation and change the session type to "LXDE".
