Encrypt OneDrive - Here's how
Companies that use OneDrive for internal documents should think about encrypting their cloud storage. This practical tip shows you how this works.
Encrypt OneDrive - with 7zip
Basically, OneDrive data is encrypted within the service. However, Microsoft cannot guarantee that these will not be read by third parties. The reason for this is that OneDrive does not have its own encryption mechanism, so it makes sense to simply encrypt the corresponding files before uploading them.
- The easiest way to do this is 7zip. You can encrypt the data in an archive within the free software and then upload it securely.
- Another advantage of this method: The files are then compressed at the same time so that they take up less space in the cloud storage.
- To do this, download and install the 7-zip file manager.
- Open the file manager.
- Add the files you want to encrypt to the file manager.
- In the "Encryption" area you have to set a password and then select an encryption method, the safest is "AES-256". Anyone who should have access to the files must know the specific password.
- For even more security you should activate the option "Encrypt file names".
- Then have the created archive encrypted.
- Now you can upload the file to OneDrive. You can only access these if you enter the specified password.
Alternative crypto programs for OneDrive encryption
Of course, there are other examples of encryption software. However, this is usually chargeable or much more complicated to set up. Boxcryptor and Cloudfogger are particularly suitable for more ambitious encryptors. You can find out how to install and set up Boxcryptor in our practical tip. The variant with 7-zip described here is probably the simplest.
