Onewheel: Germany allows driving with an electric board (not)
The onewheel found its way to Germany from America a long time ago. An adapted and final regulation of the motorized vehicle is still pending.
What is the OneWheel?
- A OneWheel is a kind of electric skateboard with just one big tire placed in the middle.
- The vehicle is controlled by shifting weight. If you put pressure on the front foot, move forward - a principle similar to that of the already known Segways.
- The gyroscope and sensors keep the balance so that you don't lose your balance when leaning back and forth.
- According to the manufacturer, the OneWheel drives up to 25 kilometers per hour depending on the driving mode and version and can cover a distance of up to twelve kilometers with one battery charge.
OneWheel in road traffic: regulation in Germany
- In Germany, such motorized vehicles that drive faster than six kilometers per hour are classified as subject to approval.
- In order to obtain such approval, the OneWheel, like other vehicles, would have to be fitted with mudguards, taillights etc. in order to be considered suitable for road traffic.
- Since this is not applicable to the e-skateboard, it is not possible to allow the OneWheel, such as Segways, to use it in traffic.
- According to the current legal situation, it is not possible to use the OneWheel in public traffic.
- However, driving on the sidewalk or in the pedestrian zone is also not permitted since it is classified as a "motor vehicle". You can only use the OneWheel on private premises.
