Online ID function: is the procedure safe?
In this practical tip, we will explain to you whether the online ID function of the ID card is secure and what you should consider.
1. Online ID only secure with a secure PC
Important: Your PC should be secured against other people having access to your data.
- Always keep your PC up to date - as well as anti-virus software and the associated firewall. Regularly scan for viruses and malware. Your browser should also always be up to date.
- The so-called "AusweisApp", which functions as driver software for all online functions, should always be up-to-date.
2. Protect ID data securely
With the new ID you will receive a PIN, a PUK and an unlock password - keep your data in a safe place to which third parties have no access
- Change your PIN regularly.
- Avoid easy-to-guess combinations of numbers or dates of birth. If you have entered your PIN incorrectly three times, you will need the PUK.
3. Secure card reader for secure online identification
The card reader connects your ID card to the computer. You should therefore use a safe device.
- You have the choice between the basic, standard and convenience readers. Please note: the basic reader does not have its own keyboard, so you should enter your PIN using the AusweisApp using the mouse.
- However, devices with their own keyboard, i.e. the standard and convenience reader, are recommended by experts. When purchasing a device, you should note the BSI certificate.
4. Pay attention to the online certificate
Service providers also have a certificate with which they can identify themselves.
- Before you are asked to enter your personal data, you will see the certificate of the respective provider. There you can see which data the provider requires from you. In addition, a reputable provider can be identified.
- Do not enter your personal data until you have convinced yourself of the certificate!
By the way: You can also deactivate the online function of your ID card.
