You can use an online toll calculator to calculate toll fees before a trip, as tolls are now payable on many motorways, tunnels and expressways in Europe. We'll provide you with useful toll calculators so that you know in advance what the costs will be.
ADAC: Online toll calculator
You can use the "Maps" route planner from ADAC to calculate the toll charges for your trip. Not only the abroad, but also the tolls that are due in Germany are taken into account here.
- Open ADAC Maps in your browser.
- Enter the start and destination of your route in the text boxes at the top left (see picture).
- In addition to many other functions, you can also specify stopovers or change the route.
- You will now receive detailed information on which roads, tunnels or bridges are subject to toll in the respective country and how high the toll or toll sticker fee is.
- You can also find out under "Route in detail" where you have to pay the fee and which means of payment you can use. Tips on how to avoid individual toll routes are also available.
Toll information Europe: Briefly summarized
The amount of the toll is not fixed across Europe, these differ from country to country. In addition, it also depends on the vehicle types and the kilometers traveled in the respective country. We have put together a small overview of the most frequently visited countries in Europe.
- Italy: There are approximately 80 toll highways in Italy. The toll is made up of the vehicle category and the kilometers traveled. Driving on motorways with many bridges and tunnels is also charged. The average toll price for a small car is around 0.07 euros per kilometer.
- Spain: Except for city motorways, tolls have to be paid on every motorway in Spain. Here, too, the calculation is based on the vehicle type and the number of kilometers driven. With a car or motorhome you pay around 0.09 euros per kilometer.
- Austria: If you drive through Austria, you have to pay toll on every motorway and expressway. There is even a special toll for some motorways. You pay the toll as a flat rate for a certain period of time and can therefore drive all over Austria.
- A vignette for ten days costs 8.50 euros, for two months 24.80 euros and for a whole year you pay 82.70 euros by car. This vignette must be visibly attached to your vehicle and can be removed after leaving the country.
- France: In France, most motorways and expressways are affected by the toll. By car you pay around 0.09 euros per kilometer, an environmental badge is also required. This costs 4.80 euros and must be purchased online in advance.
