OpenOffice: Create table of contents - how it works
You can easily create a table of contents in OpenOffice. You only need to have headings in your document that you can display in the table of contents.
Format text for the table of contents in OpenOffice
In order for OpenOffice to know what the headings and subheadings are, you have to format them accordingly.
- Before you write the heading or after you have marked it, change the formatting to "Heading 1" to the left of the font selection.
- Depending on the level of the heading, you can also select heading 2, 3 or 4. These are then shown in the table of contents.
- Under "More ..." you will also find all sub-headings up to "Heading 10" and if even that is not enough, you can add all the others yourself.
Create table of contents in OpenOffice
- Place the cursor where you want to create the table of contents.
- In the "Insert" menu, select "Directories and Tables ..." and then "Directories ...".
- In the following dialog you can leave everything as it is and click on "OK" - unless you have more than 10 heading levels and want to include all of them in your table of contents: You have to set this under "Evaluate up to level".
The practical tip relates to OpenOffice version 4.0.0.
