Use OpenStreetMap as a navigation system - how it works
You can use the map from the free Google Maps alternative OpenStreetMap as a navigation system. Depending on the manufacturer, however, this is associated with more or less effort. We show you which options are the simplest.
OpenStreetMap map on the navigation system
The easiest is to use OpenStreetMap with a Garmin navigation system.
- You can install maps using the MapSource tool, which Garmin ships with its navigation systems. It's best to choose the map you want from the OpenStreetMap wiki.
- To use the card, you only need to activate it under Settings.
The smartphone as a navigation system with an OpenStreetMap map
If you would like to save yourself the expense of a navigation system, you can alternatively use your smartphone with the OpenStreetMap map.
- With the "OsmAnd Maps & Navigation" app you can turn your Android smartphone into a fully-fledged navigation system including maps from OpenStreetMap for free. OpenStreetMap as a navigation system is also available for iOS devices, but not for nothing - the iOS app "GPS Navigation + Blitzer (skobbler navigation system and speed camera warning)" currently costs 1.79 euros.
