Protect the folder on the USB stick with a password
With an additional program, you can protect folders on your USB stick with a password. That's how it's done.
Set up TrueCrypt for USB stick
With the program "TrueCrypt" you can protect files on your USB stick with a password.
- Download "TrueCrypt" and install it.
- Now connect your USB stick to the computer.
- Open "TrueCrypt" and click on "Create Volume".
- Select the item "Create an encrypted file cotainer" and confirm with "Next". Then select "Standard TrueCrypt Volume".
- In the "Volume Location" window, click "Select File". Now select your USB stick. Write "container.tc" in the "File name" field and confirm with "Save" (see picture gallery).
- Confirm in the "Encryption Options" window with "Next".
- Now select how big the folder to be protected should be. If you want to secure the entire contents of the USB stick with a password, do not enter the full size, but leave about 100MB free.
- Now set your password.
- The USB stick is then formatted. Select "FAT" in the file system and confirm with "Format".
Create Traveler Disk
Now you have to create the "Traveler Disk". In this way you can also access the files on PCs that do not have "TrueCrypt" installed.
- In the main window, click "Tools" and "Traveler Disk Setup".
- Select your USB stick under "Create Traveler Disk Files at".
- Now click on "Auto-mount TrueCrypt volume" under "AutoRun configuration". Under "TrueCrypt volume to mount", select the "container.tc" file you just created. Confirm with "Create".
- In your USB stick you will now find the folder "TrueCrypt", an "autorun" file and "container.tc". If you want to save files on your USB stick without a password, simply move them to the USB stick as usual.
Protect folder with password
Now open the folder with password protection as follows:
- Go to the "TrueCrypt" folder on your "USB stick".
- Now open the "TrueCrypt" application.
- Find a drive in the list and click on "Select File" in the lower right corner. Now select the "container.tc" file on your USB stick. Then click on "Mount".
- Now enter your password.
- Now switch to the computer. Here you can see a new hard drive. It has the letter you just selected. This is now the folder that can only be opened with a password. To lock the folder again, switch back to "TrueCrypt", select the respective hard disk and click on "Dismount".
This practical tip shows you how to protect individual files with a password.
