OS X Mavericks: Work on Mac with iBooks
Since OS X Mavericks, Macs have also supported Apple's own iBooks service. How to enjoy books you bought from the iTunes store on your Mac, too. If you create books yourself with iBooks Author, you can now test them directly on your Apple computer. You are spared the route via an iOS device.
Download, read and buy iBooks on Mac
When you open iBooks for the first time, the program is already linked to your Apple ID. All books that you have already bought with your account will be displayed.
- Before reading your books on Mac, you must first download them from the cloud to your computer. All you need to do is click on the cloud symbol.
- You can also read epub books that you didn't buy with your own Apple ID using iBooks. Simply open them in the Finder with iBooks and they will be added to your iBooks library. However, if the books were purchased using a different Apple ID, you must first unlock your computer with the password of the foreign ID to use them.
The main features of iBooks under Mavericks
With iBooks you work directly on the text. As soon as you have marked a text passage, a menu opens similar to Kindle. You can:
- Mark and underline the text in color.
- copy the text passage and paste it into a document.
- share a passage in a social network or send it by email.
- Search terms on Wikipedia, within the book, or on the web.
Test your own iBooks on your Mac
If you want to create an iBook yourself with iBooks Author, the iBooks implementation of OS X Mavericks saves you having to go through an iOS device. Previously, you had to connect an iPad or iPhone to your Mac to preview your iBook. With Mavericks, you are now viewing a pre-release version of your EPUB on Mac.
- Open your book in iBook Author.
- Click on the "Preview" button in the top right of the menu bar.
- Select "This computer (iBooks for Mac)" as the device.
- Click on "Preview".
