OTA simply explains: what exactly is that?
The term "OTA" is often used to refer to smartphones and other mobile devices. However, very few know what that actually is. We clarify it.
OTA: What is that exactly?
- The abbreviation OTA stands for "Over The Air", in German "über die Luft". It is a wireless method of transferring settings and updates to mobile devices.
- With the classic OTA, e-mail, MMS or WAP settings are sent wirelessly to a cell phone or smartphone.
- For the latter, you can, for example, specify the correct Internet settings for your smartphone on the website of many mobile phone manufacturers, which are then sent to your mobile phone and set up via OTA.
FOTA: Often referred to as OTA
- When people talk about OTA these days, they often mean FOTA, the so-called "Firmware Over The Air". It is the possibility to download firmware updates via WLAN.
- For several years now, you have been able to download and install new firmware updates via WLAN on both Apple devices such as the iPhone and Android devices. The technology is not particularly new, but the term is not used very often.
