When you select new messages with the arrow keys, Outlook automatically marks the e-mails as read as soon as you hesitate a little while browsing. This is annoying, but can be easily deactivated.

Change Outlook "read" settings
In its basic setting, the program actually marks new messages as read very quickly. The behavior can be changed easily:
- Older versions of Outlook (up to 2007): Open "Tools> Options" and switch to the "More" tab. Under "Outlook areas" click on "Reading area" and in the next dialog remove the checkmark in front of "Mark element as read when new selection is made".
- In newer versions (from Outlook 2010) you will find the function described above here: "File> Options> Advanced". At the top right is the "Reading Area" button (see screenshot).
- From now on, Outlook will only change the status of a new message if you open and read it by double-clicking or [Enter], or if you right-click on it and select "Mark as read" in the context menu.
