OwnCloud: 3 good alternatives for the private cloud
Saving the files or a quick backup: A cloud like OwnCloud is indispensable for many. But there are some alternatives to OwnCloud. We introduce you to three.
Dropbox - one of the largest cloud service providers
Dropbox is probably one of the best-known cloud providers.
- You can get up to two GB of storage space free of charge from the cloud provider. If you need more, you will of course get the corresponding storage space. For example, up to 500 GB of storage space is available for $ 50 a month. Of course, there are more variants, so you will probably quickly discover the right cloud model for yourself.
- If you refer friends, you will receive additional web space.
- Using a virtual folder, you can quickly synchronize your files between different computers and the joint editing and exchange of files via various devices also works without any problems.
- As an additional bonus, Dropbox can automatically save your screenshots in the cloud; just like the photos from the webcam or your smartphone.
Google Drive - the most generous online storage service
Google also has an attractive cloud service with its Google Drive service.
- Although the offers of the cloud service providers are similar, Google Drive is definitely one step ahead in one respect. Instead of the usual 2 GB of free storage space, Google Drive gives you a full 15 GB of cloud storage space free of charge. Like all other cloud service providers, Google also has other fee-based offers.
- Even with Google Drive, you can conveniently save your files in a folder. The data exchange and the synchronization of the data of course also works smoothly with Google Drive.
- In addition, Google Drive includes an office package that includes the most important office programs with Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Presentations, so that you can work online comfortably on the go.
SpiderOak - for the security of your files
Finally, a tip from what is currently the most famous whistleblower Edward Snowden. He is critical of services like Dropbox in terms of data security and recommends the online service SpiderOak instead.
- SpiderOak gives you 2 GB of storage space in the cloud free of charge. If you need more cloud storage, you can get 100 GB for $ 10 per month, for example.
- The special thing about SpiderOak is the supposedly 100 percent data security that the online storage service promises. A technology called "Zero-Knowledge" is supposed to ensure this. The aim of the process is to prevent anyone - including the cloud operator - from being able to see user data. The data is immediately encrypted and the password is not in plain text.
- In addition, since the new version 5, you can also save all files in a folder with SpiderOak and synchronize them with other devices.
- It is also practical that you can integrate SpiderOak into the context menu so that you always have quick access to your cloud.
- However, the SpiderOak website is - at least currently - only available in English.
