OwnCloud upgrade - update manually & automatically
Small updates and major upgrades appear regularly for OwnCloud. We explain how to install them manually and automatically.
Install OwnCloud updates
Updates are comparatively small updates that, for example, fix inconspicuous errors. This does not change the main version number of OwnCloud, but it does. You can recognize an update by a jump from 6.0.0 to 6.0.6, for example.
- First of all, you should make a backup of your OwnCloud data. Back up your OwnCloud folder and the database.
- For updates, use the pre-installed OwnCloud plugin "Updater". Make sure that this plugin is also activated.
- Go to the "Admin" page.
- Then reload the page by pressing the [CTRL] and [F5] keys simultaneously.
How to install OwnCloud upgrades manually
Upgrades are big packages that OwnCloud reworks in every nook and corner. In addition, the version number for upgrades usually changes from, for example, 5.0.18 to 6.0.0.
- You should make a backup of your OwnCloud installation, especially before upgrades, as such updates make numerous changes.
- Before you can install an upgrade, OwnCloud must be up to date with the latest update. So make sure that all current updates are installed and that the version number meets the requirements.
- Use this command to download the latest version: wget //download.owncloud.org/community/owncloud-latest.tar.bz2
- Also disable all third party applications.
- Now delete everything from your OwnCloud installation directory, except the "data" and "config" folders.
- Then unzip the downloaded TAR file into your OwnCloud directory. Alternatively, you can unzip the files elsewhere and then copy them to your OwnCloud directory.
- You can also use the following command: tar xjf owncloud-latest.tar.bz2. If your directory is not called "owncloud", you have to adapt the command accordingly.
- Now set all permissions according to your wishes.
- The next page request will be upgraded.
- After the upgrade is complete, you can activate your installed third-party applications again.
- To do this, check whether the respective developers already offer versions that are compatible with the new upgrade.
- If necessary, install and activate them and update them when you are notified.
Enable automatic updates for the OwnCloud client
OwnCloud offers an automatic updater for the synchronization client that you can install on your computer. Under Windows and Mac OS X, the updater always keeps the client up to date. Unfortunately, automatic updates do not work under Linux, but the updater informs you as soon as new updates are available.
- To check the status of the updater, open the "Settings" menu.
- Switch to the "General" tab.
- You can check the updates under "Update".
- If an automatic update fails, the updater will inform you and suggest a manual update. Then just follow the instructions.
