Pagefile.sys - what is it?
When browsing through the folders of your own computer, you often come across the file pagefile.sys. We'll tell you what's behind it.
The Windows Pagefile.sys file
- Pagefile.sys is a system file that belongs to Windows. If your memory is busy, particularly complex processes are transferred to the pagefile.sys file and processed there. However, this happens much more slowly since the hard disk usually does not work as fast as the main memory.
- The size of the file can range from a few hundred MBytes to a few GBytes. It is usually twice the size of the built-in RAM. It cannot be deleted, but its size can be changed. Under normal circumstances, however, this is not necessary and should not be carried out by laypersons.
- The more RAM your computer has, the less data needs to be transferred to the pagefile.sys file.
Another process that does not take up a lot of memory but uses a lot of RAM is the cisvc.exe. This practical tip shows you how to stop the service.
