The PayPal Terms and Conditions regulate whether you, as an under 18 year old, may use the services of the online payment system. In this practical tip, we will show you how PayPal regulates this and what you should consider.
Using PayPal under 18 - is this legal?
In the PayPal terms and conditions you will find a clear note regarding minors:
- The data protection principles contain the following sentence in duplicate: "Special note on the minimum age. Children are not authorized to use our services, and we ask that minors (under 18 years) do not transmit any personal data to us and the PayPal services do not use."
- PayPal clearly points out that minors are not allowed to use the service. For this reason, you must not log in to PayPal, pay money with the service, or receive payments.
- Also in the terms of use, PayPal again points out the provisions in the area of registration: "You can only register with PayPal in Germany to open a PayPal account if you are of legal age and have a domicile or place of business in Germany." For this reason, minors are not allowed to register with PayPal.
- Please also note that in Germany you are only legally able to do business unrestrictedly when you turn 18.
- If you still want to use the service, you should contact your parents or guardians. Depending on the purpose, they could possibly process the payment in their own name.
Registered under 18 - is there a penalty?
If you still sign up for PayPal even though you are under the age of 18, this can have consequences.
- If, for example, you entered an incorrect date of birth in order to use PayPal, it may happen that the payment service blocks your account.
- In the worst case, it is even possible that you remain blocked after you have reached the age of 18. You may not be able to use PayPal for a lifetime.
- It can always happen that your account is checked, so it is not advisable to provide false information. It is better to contact the legal guardian or to wait until you are of legal age.
